Students can cash personal checks up to $100 for cash at the Office of Student Account Services with their student ID, if their account is in good standing. Two-party checks are only accepted if from a parent or grandparent.
Most merchants will accept local checks as long as students have a government-issued identification. Your student may want to open an account at a local bank when they arrive in Maryville.
For many students, college is the first opportunity to take responsibility for their finances. Parents can help with the transition by discussing items such as budgeting, credit cards and paying bills.
- Budget – Encourage your student to create a weekly or monthly budget and teach them how to balance their bank account. The budget should include both regular expenses such as monthly bills and groceries, and infrequent expenses, such as new clothes or health care expenses.
- Credit Cards – Students often open credit card accounts when they are making the transition to college. It is important to teach your student about the positives and negatives of owning a credit card. Be sure to explain how to compare credit card offers, read the fine print and responsibly manage debt.
- Paying Bills – Many students’ bills are sent directly to their campus address. Your student should be prepared to pay bills such as tuition, phone and credit cards. Explain to your student how to accurately read billing statements, teach them how to organize their bills, avoid late fees and to resolve problems with incorrect bills.
